Staying Safe on All-Terrain Vehicles

Summer’s here, and with the open spaces our state has to offer, many Arizonans enjoy riding all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). While fun, ATVs can be dangerous. Injuries have doubled in recent years, and one-third of all ATV-related deaths and injuries involve victims younger than 16.

Stay safe by following these tips from AAA of Arizona:

  • ATVs with an engine size of 70cc to 90cc should be operated by people at least 12 years of age, while ATVs with an engine size greater than 90cc should be operated only by those at least 16 years of age.
  • Always wear a helmet and protective safety gear, including goggles and protective clothing.
  • Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Do not drive with a passenger.
  • Do not engage in or attempt stunt riding.
  • Drive only on designated trails at a safe speed.
  • To protect yourself against liability, insure your ATV, even if being used only for off-road excursions.
