Resolution Copper, Local Schools Conclude Two Programs for Educators and Students; Plans Underway for Fall Sessions
On Saturday, May 13, teachers and administrators from Superior and San Carlos visited Copper Butte, a copper mining area about 10 miles south of Superior, where they collected copper minerals, volcanic ash, and volcanic glass. They photographed unique geological structures and landscapes. The field trip was the final in a series of classroom sessions and outdoor excursions that comprised the Situating Earth and Space Sciences (SESS) course led by Professor Steven Semken of Arizona State University (ASU) and sponsored by Resolution Copper.
The graduate-level course was such a success that an updated version will begin this November and will run through March 2008. Plans are to involve students from additional towns in the Copper Triangle including Globe, Hayden and Winkelman.
Resolution Copper is sponsoring the course through a partnership with ASU’s Center for Research on Education in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology (CRESMET). Our company funds course materials and supplies and also pays half of the tuition cost for teachers participating for academic credit. Successful course completion earns three semester hours of ASU graduate credit.
Resolution Copper and CRESMET also partner to support a hands-on science program that reaches Superior and San Carlos students and teachers. The program, which includes both instruction and professional development workshops, aims to interest students in studying and pursuing careers in science and technology. A graduate fellow will join classroom sessions part-time each week throughout the 2007-2008 academic year.
