Resolution Copper Community Contributions Run the Gamut
The communities in which we operate give a great deal to Resolution Copper, not only support for our project, but also access to skilled local contractors and company employees who are helping to make our 21st century mine a reality. We believe it’s equally important to give back to the community in ways that improve the local economy and quality of life. Charitable donations include money and in-kind contributions such as equipment, facilities, technical resource and volunteer support. So far this year, we’ve contributed nearly $40,000 to benefit community development, education (not including scholarships), and environmental progress.
You may be surprised to find the variety of organizations and activities we support. Our philanthropy is often behind the scenes, and may go unnoticed by residents of Superior and surrounding communities. We don’t donate haphazardly. Instead, we target issues the community has identified as important. Our giving guidelines also ensure that we fund projects and causes that coincide with the mission of Resolution Copper and of our parent company, Rio Tinto.
Here’s a snapshot of just a few of the varied community organizations and events we supported during the first half of 2007:
Pinal County Annual Town Hall Meeting: “Rediscovering our Neighborhoods.” Resolution Copper contributed $750 toward this annual symposium focused on economic development. Delegates gathered in April to determine ways to help residents of Pinal County regain a sense of commitment and confidence in their communities.
Superior Soap Box Derby: RCM donated $1,350 toward the cost of carts, entry fees to the qualifying race, and a trip to Akron for the finals.
Apache Leap Festival: Resolution Copper was a bronze-level ($500) sponsor of Superior’s 2007 Apache Leap Days and Mining Festival.
San Carlos/Superior Technology Tour: A trip was arranged for students to visit the State Capitol Museum and the Arizona Senate through the county supervisor’s office. Transport and lunch were needed, and Resolution Copper provided $1,200 to facilitate the trip.
Boys and Girls Clubs of the East Valley: RCM donated $500 to the ninth annual Yesteryear event, which raised funds to help the club provide a positive place for kids to go after school.
Town of Superior Community Pool: Resolution Copper sponsors a free swim day once a week throughout the summer to allow kids free entry to the community pool ($500 donation).
Audubon Arizona Bird Conservation Initiative: The company donated $1,000 toward the cost of this two-day workshop for avian monitoring volunteers.
Magma Club Celebration: RCM donated more than $1,500 for the Magma Club Celebration by providing ice cream and popcorn from Felicia’s Ice Cream Shop and sponsoring the performance by Sipie and his Big Band Sound.
