Energy Management

As a future major consumer of power and in accordance with Rio Tinto green house gas policies, Resolution Copper works to continually improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gases. This commitment begins in the current pre-feasibility stage of our mine evaluation process. In 2007 we brought in the Rocky Mountain Institute and internationally recognized energy expert, Amory Lovins, to facilitate an Energy Innovation workshop to identify potential energy-saving methods and designs for our future mine.

In 2008 we continued to work with the ideas developed in 2007 and to keep abreast of clean energy trends in Arizona. John Anderson of Point 380, who was involved in the initial Energy Innovation workshop, was hired to evaluate the energy efficiency of some of our mine design work and to prioritize ongoing energy-saving projects.

During 2008 we also worked closely with one of Arizona's largest energy suppliers, Salt River Project (SRP), to evaluate the transmission infrastructure required to provide power to our future mine and plant sites.

We have used an energy-efficient design in constructing the pipeline that will carry treated water from the legacy mine site near Superior to water districts where it can be blended with Central Arizona Project (CAP) water and used for irrigation. Despite the fact that the water will be transported more than 27 miles, the pipeline runs downhill so that water does not have to be pumped, thereby saving significant energy.
