Surveying our stakeholders

To gain a clear picture of where we stand with stakeholders, we conduct periodic regional and statewide surveys, then measure results over time.

We conducted a statewide survey in 2003 and recently completed a second statewide poll. Regional surveys of stakeholders living within the Copper Triangle took place in 2003, 2007 and January of 2009. In each case, telephone surveys were conducted by professional interviewers and included a statistically relevant random sampling of heads of households within the targeted area. Results were then tabulated and compared against previous research findings.

Here is a sense of where we stand now and how stakeholder opinion has evolved over time:

Statewide survey results

Conducted in January, 2009, the telephone survey included a random sample of 400 adult heads of household living in Arizona. Result highlights:

  • 84 percent of Arizona residents are concerned that the economic downturn will negatively affect their families
  • 86 percent say copper mining is important to the state's economy
  • 90 percent say they have a very favorable or generally favorable opinion of the company
  • 86 percent strongly or generally support developing the mine
  • A majority of all Arizona residents, 51 percent, support the land exchange
  • 56 percent say they are willing to sign a petition stating their support for a new copper mine in Superior
  • The primary reason for mine support throughout Arizona is the belief that our mine will create new jobs (57 percent) and revitalize the economy (33 percent)

Survey response concerns

The most significant concern about our proposed mine continues to be its potential environmental effect. Mining in general is often perceived as not being sensitive to the environment, particularly with regard to water or air pollution and scarring of the land.

Copper Triangle survey

As we began 2009, we also surveyed 342 heads of household in Globe, Miami, Hayden, Kearny, Superior and Winkelman. Virtually all residents of the Copper Triangle (99 percent) believe copper mining is important to the state's economy. A high ratio (90 percent) strongly or generally supports our proposed mine, and 78 percent say they are willing to sign a petition stating their support. Like the statewide survey, the number one reason behind the support of regional respondents is their belief that our new mine will create jobs (60 percent) and revitalize the Copper Triangle economy (34 percent).

Support for the land exchange is even stronger throughout the region than was reflected in our statewide stakeholder survey. Fully two-thirds of all Copper Triangle residents or 67 percent support the exchange.
