Trends over time
We also compared the results of recent surveys with those of previous years to determine how stakeholder views were tracking on important issues. Responses from surveys taken in 2003, 2007 and 2009 were compared and yielded the following:
- Awareness of Resolution Copper Mining regionally rose from 26 percent in 2003 to 85 percent in 2009. Statewide, awareness more than tripled, from nine percent to 31 percent.
- Positive stakeholder opinion of Resolution Copper has also trended positively over time. In the 2003 statewide survey, 78 percent of those with awareness of Resolution Copper had a favorable opinion of the company, while in 2009, that figure increased to 90 percent.
- In our 2009 regional survey, 89 percent of Copper Triangle respondents in our 2009 regional survey said that Resolution Copper is a good neighbor and is involved in the community, an eight percent increase over 2007. Also, 85 percent of those polled in January '09 said that Resolution Copper does a good job of keeping citizens informed about the project, a five percent increase from 2007. (Note: These questions were not included in statewide surveys and were also not a part of the 2003 regional survey.)
- Support for the land exchange has been more of a challenge over time. In the Copper Triangle, support for the land exchange in 2003 stood at 65 percent of the total population. In 2007, this figure dipped to 50 percent, and in 2009, support had risen to 67 percent. Statewide, 53 percent of those surveyed supported the exchange in 2003, while in 2009, that figure had fallen slightly to 50 percent. These patterns are not surprising given the complexity of the exchange and the number and variety of stakeholders both for and against such legislation. However, one point is clear: we must continue communicating with our stakeholders about the social and economic benefits of the land exchange, our environmental commitment and our willingness to listen and respond to stakeholder concerns.
Based on survey results and trends, the company is undertaking an ambitious external communications program in 2009 to inform and respond to stakeholders. Learn more.
