Sustainable Development
Sustainable development: approach and governance
Sustainable development can mean different things to different organizations. At Resolution Copper we view sustainable development as central to our business success and to our desire to provide environmental, economic and societal value that will last well beyond the life of the mine we seek to operate.
As a project within the Rio Tinto Copper Group, we adopt and extend our parent company's commitment to core principles outlined in The way we work. Within Resolution Copper, our approach to sustainable development is driven by the following concepts:
- We place the health and safety of our employees and our extended team of independent contractors as a top priority.
- We strive to show care and concern for the environment in all we do.
- We support and enable the self-defined socio-economic development goals of the communities in which we operate.
- We are accountable. We conduct our business ethically, ensure oversight and governance of our commitments, and communicate openly with stakeholders about our business performance, including both successes and failures.
The Resolution Copper management team drives sustainable development principles down through all operational departments within RCM. Each part of our organization develops specific targets in support of sustainable development and line managers are responsible for tracking and reporting progress against these targets. Operational challenges and opportunities that affect sustainable development are discussed at weekly management meetings and during periodic all-employee meetings. In addition to this annual report, the results of our efforts are shared publicly throughout the year via our website and through stakeholder communications, including community meetings, open houses and periodic Issues Brief newsletters.
