About Our Business
Resolution Copper Mining is a limited liability company owned by Resolution Copper Company (55 percent), a Rio Tinto plc subsidiary, and BHP Copper, Inc (45 percent), a BHP Billiton Ltd. subsidiary. This partnership of two of the world's leading international mining companies was forged based on the immense future promise of an ore body located more than 7,000 feet below the surface in the vicinity of the former Magma Copper Mine near Superior, Arizona. Exploration indicates what may be the largest copper deposit in the US, one capable of producing more than 20 percent of expected US copper demand over several decades.
The Resolution Project consists of two sites: one north of Superior called the West Plant site, which was the location of mining and smelting activities of the historic Magma Mine from 1910 until 1996; and another at Oak Flat (known as the East Plant site), the main location for mining beginning in the 1970s. The West Plant site is the focus of major multi-million dollar cleanup efforts by Resolution Copper. The East Plant site is the focus of future development.
The Resolution Project is located in an historic mining district in Pinal County, three miles east of Superior, Arizona.
Resolution Copper Mining drives and manages all activities related to the Resolution Project and our organization is part of the Rio Tinto Copper Group.
