Powering Progress: 8 Shaft VFD Upgrade Delivers Big Wins

From September 8–24, Resolution Copper completed a major infrastructure upgrade at the historic Magma Mine’s 8 Shaft, replacing a 20-year-old 480V variable frequency drive (VFD) with a new 5KV unit.

What’s a VFD?
A variable frequency drive (VFD) adjusts motor speed and power to match the job, boosting efficiency and reducing wear.

This wasn’t just a routine equipment swap. It was a carefully planned, high-impact project involving:

  • 1200 manhours across multiple teams
  • $500,000 investment
  • Removal of two aging transformers
  • Seamless coordination between RC crews and local contractors

The Highlights: Teamwork in Action

What made this project shine wasn’t just the technology — it was the people.

Crews from Surface and Underground Electrical, HVAC, Surface Operations, and Water Treatment worked shoulder-to-shoulder with trusted local partners: Sturgeon Electric, Oddonetto, and Rockwell. From day one, communication was clear, planning was tight, and every team brought their A-game.

  • Surface and UG Electrical ensured safe removal and installation of the new high-voltage system.
  • HVAC supported environmental controls to keep systems running smoothly during the transition.
  • Surface Ops and Water Treatment coordinated pump testing and flow monitoring.
  • Contractors brought deep technical expertise and local pride to every shift.

The logistics were complex — with a 60-ton crane on site, transport trucks moving between 8 Shaft and Never Sweat MCC, and multiple crews working in sync. But thanks to strong collaboration and shared ownership, the project stayed on track and on time.

And the best moment? When the new VFD was commissioned, the 8 Shaft pump roared to life, and water began flowing to the treatment plant. That moment captured what Copper Strong is all about — smart planning, local partnerships, and a shared commitment to building a world-class mine.
