Stewardship You Can See at Oak Flat Campground

If you’re planning a visit to Oak Flat, here’s the most important thing to know:
Oak Flat Campground remains open.

Public access has not changed. Visitors can continue to camp, rock climb, hike, use recreational roads and enjoy the campground. There are no new public restrictions, no new campground fees and no new recreation rules associated with the campground management transition.

What’s New
Campground management is now being provided by 4Winds Contracting, an Apache-owned business with strong ties to the local community. Their work is focused on maintaining the campground and improving the visitor experience.

Since taking over management, crews have completed a number of upgrades, including:

  • Installing new campground signage.
  • Replacing restroom doors, locks and hardware.
  • Installing new restroom sidelights.
  • Painting both restroom buildings.
  • Removing aging concrete picnic tables and installing new rubber-coated metal tables on new concrete pads.
  • Installing new campfire rings throughout the campground.

Approximately $130,000 has been invested in these improvements to date.

What Hasn’t Changed
The management transition does not change how visitors use Oak Flat. The campground remains open, and visitors can continue to camp, rock climb, hike, use recreational roads and enjoy everything Oak Flat has to offer. Public access remains unchanged, and Oak Flat continues to be open for everyone to enjoy.

A Question We’ve Heard

One question we’ve heard is whether the campground management transition means mining activities begin immediately. The answer is no. Public recreation continues uninterrupted, and the campground remains open.

Mining and recreation have coexisted in the area for generations and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Taking care of Oak Flat isn’t about changing the experience; it’s about protecting it.

Whether it’s repainting a restroom or replacing aging picnic tables, every improvement is intended to make the campground safer, more comfortable and more enjoyable for everyone who visits.
